Dangerous Uncertainties

http://laopinion.com/editorial/?rkey=00000000000002934830

The article "Dangerous Uncertainties" posted on La Opinion, juxtaposes the situation in Pakistan after the murder of Benazir Bhutto. Bhutto was a strong polical leader who was running for the presidency of her home country Pakistan, and was hoping to bring democracy to the country. Even after being threatened several times before, and after being in exile in London, she was willing to risk her life to seek a better government for her people. Unfortunately, Bhutto's enemies got what they wanted, her death, as they did with Bhutto's father and two brothers in past elections. Eventhough current president, Pervez Musharraf has also been threatened, his government is being affected. "Bhutto’s assassination has brought dangerous uncertainties" for Pakistan and the world.

Tone Condemning, Concerned
App. Question How chaotic can this situation become, and how does it affect the U.S. government and citizens?

obviously we've lost a critical ally in the "fight for democracy" in the region and the fact that pakistan is a growing nuclear power is more than disconcerting to the U.S.

also, if the elections are still held more violence is possible, but if the people really want democracy, the new leaders of Bhutto's party must rise and milk that desire while it exists, before it wanes into complacency from populist bribes by radicals.

As for the U.S., im so tired of us butting into everything. however, if the elections continue and the people decide they want a democracy, the U.S. should help the elected government ward off attempts at its demise.

that of course is a difficult tread, since what then determines whether or not to send aid? what type of aid? will said aid adversely affect Americans? start at home i say, and then branch out.

like salvi said..the us has lost a key adjutant in pakistans process in becoming a more democratic nation..
not only was she populuar among the citizens of pakistan, she was loved by many indian political figures...hence her death is one step backward towards more friendly pakistan-india relations..
